There are indications that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Ademola Adeleke, may have won the Osun West senatorial district by-election to replace the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke.

A vacancy was created following the death of Senator Isiaka Adeleke in April at the Biket Hospital in Osogbo following a heart attack. The deceased senator’s brother, Ademola Adeleke subsequently indicated interest in contesting the election to fill the vacancy.

Altercations with the top hierarchy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun state led to the exit of Mr Ademola Adeleke from the party which eventually picked a former senator, Mudasiru Hussain as its flag-bearer for the by-election.

Ademola Adeleke decamped to the PDP and was immediately handed the ticket of that party to stand in the election against Hussain.

Results from the poll which held on Saturday indicate that the PDP candidate earned a total of 97, 480 votes to win 9 out of the 10 local government areas within the senatorial district.

Hussain, who is believed to be Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s anointed candidate, got 66,116 votes.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to officially announce the winner of the election Punch however reports that the conduct of the election was generally peaceful and that both candidates expressed their confidence in INEC.
