Commotion in Enugu Prison as Inmates Protest Poor Treatment

Several inmates of the Enugu prison have been left severely injured following a protest which broke out amongst the prisoners yesterday night, Daily Post reports.

There is tension within the Enugu Prison following a protest by the inmates, Friday night.

Although details of the unrest were still sketchy as at the time of filling this report, it was gathered that so many inmates were wounded in the protest.

A prison official, who confirmed the development, said the inmates claimed they were being badly treated by the authorities.

“The ring leaders of the protest are complaining that there is a lot of partiality in the prison; they believe some inmates are getting better treatment than them.

“So, ‎they lured other inmates into staging the protest.

“However, it has been brought under control; none of them escaped”, he added.

According to a prison official, the ring leaders of the protest were inmates who had been complaining about being poorly treated by the authorities compared to some of their fellow inmates. “They had been complaining that there is a lot of partiality in the prison; they believe some inmates are getting better treatment than them,” said the official.

The disgruntled inmates reportedly convinced some others to stage a protest last night and that was when the commotion erupted. Details of the unrest remains sketchy as at the time of filing this report, however it was gathered that so many inmates were wounded in the protest. Fortunately, the tension was brought under control and no prisoner escaped.

‎The injured are currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital while a combined team of security agencies have reportedly taken over the surroundings of the prison.
