Fulani Suitor Flogged to Death by Competitor in Katsina

A young Fulani man, Yari Inusa, has died while trying to win the love of a woman in Durmin Biri village, in the Kafur Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Inusa died during a flogging game known as Sharo, which takes place between two men competing for a lady’s hand in marriage. The game entails two male suitors flogging each other for a woman’s hand in marriage. Whoever wins between them will marry the girl.

Inusa was said to have flogged his competitor, Ahmed Saidu without any incident but things went awry when Saidu took his turn to flog Inusa and hit the deceased on the head instead of hitting him on the back as the rules of the game dictates.

Inusa reportedly fainted after taking the hit to his head and subsequently died.

The Katsina State Police Command spokesman, DSP Gambo Isah, who confirmed the incident said the deceased’s father reported the incident following which Saidu was arrested.

Punch reports that Inusa’s corpse has been released to the family and buried according to Islamic rites.
