NDLEA Nabs Ex-Customs Official who Smuggles Drugs and Contraband

The  National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a former customs official, Ngwoke Emmanuel, for smuggling cannabis through Seme border to Lagos Island.

Ngwoke told NDLEA that he was paid N500,000.00 to smuggle the substance disguised as used clothes, Punch reports.

Ngwoke was nabbed with cannabis weighing 394kg by operatives of NDLEA at the Gbaji checkpoint, close to Nigeria’s border with Benin Republic.

According to NDLEA spokesperson, the estimated value of the drug is N4m.

NDLEA commander at the Seme border, Udotung Essien, said investigation is ongoing and the suspect will soon be charged to court.

The 39-year-old suspect said he thought he was smuggling used clothes and not narcotics.

I was paid N500,000 to smuggle the goods from the border to Lagos Island but when the consignment was searched by customs officers at Gbaji checking point, it turned out to be cannabis.

That was how they arrested, dismissed and transferred me to NDLEA. I was only concerned about taking care of my wife and child. I did not know what next to do.”
