No Solution in Sight as Talks Between Labour and Government over Fuel Price Hike Reportedly end in Deadlock

Talks between the Federal Government and organised labour on the hike of petrol price hit a stone wall on Monday as no decision was reached after 4 hours of deliberation.

Organised labour had on Sunday given the government a 96-hour ultimatum to revert the increase in the pump price to N86.50 or face a total shutdown of economic activities in the county.
Last Wednesday, the government announced an increase in the price of petrol, explaining that the increase was due to the scarcity of forex at the official rate which had forced marketers to source the needed forex from the black market.
Talking to journalists after the meeting, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, however, said the meeting, which ended at about 12 midnight, was fruitful and will continue at 3pm on Tuesday.

But, just as they concluded the meeting, the main faction of the Nigerian Labour Congress led by Ayuba Wabba almost immediately walked into another meeting with the Joe Ajaero-led faction of the labour movement.

According to the Punch, sources at the meeting said the labour leaders were not convinced by the figures presented by the government.

Those who attended the meeting include Ayuba Wabba;  NLC General Secretary, Peter Ozo-Esun; NUPENG president, Igwe Achese; PENGASSAN President, Olabode Johnson; TUC President, Bobboi Kaigama; Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige; Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang; and the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole.
