1 Division Hosts Seminar On Transformational Leadership For Junior, Mid-Cadre Officers and Senior Non-Commission Officers

In a bid to enhance leadership capacity and operational effectiveness in today’s complex and dynamic security environment, the 1 Division Nigerian Army hosted a seminar organized by the Army Headquarters Department of Transformation and Innovation (DATI) for Junior and Mid-Cadre Officers as well as Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs) within the Division Area of Responsibility (AOR). The seminar, held in the Division’s Auditorium in Kaduna, had the theme “Transformational Leadership and Nigerian Army Operational Effectiveness in a Joint and Multi-Agency Environment,” was aimed at empowering junior and mid-cadre commanders with the requisite skills and knowledge needed to excel in their roles.

While flagging off the seminar, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede NAM, represented by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division and Commander Sector 1 Joint Task Force North-West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Mayirenso Lander David Saraso, highlighted that the seminar was targeted at junior and mid-cadre officers, focusing on leadership effectiveness and fellowship at the tactical level where battles are engaged, planned, and executed to accomplish operational-level objectives. He further described junior and mid-cadre officers as frontline commanders responsible for leading and sustaining their men with morale and fighting spirits. He reiterated that the Nigerian Army would continue to develop its tactics, skills, and procedures, employing both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies aimed at decimating its adversaries.

In his remarks, the Chief of Transformation and Innovation, Maj Gen Olusegun Abai, called on commanders to innovate ideas and upskill their approach towards improving man management and battle readiness. He added that the theme of the seminar aligns with the Chief of Army Staff’s command philosophy which is “to consolidate the transformation of the Nigerian Army towards bequeathing a well-motivated, combat-ready force that can effectively discharge its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environment”. He emphasized that the seminar on transformational leadership would mark a significant step in enhancing the Nigerian Army’s leadership capabilities, demonstrating its commitment to excellence and readiness to tackle emerging challenges.

Dignitaries who attended the workshop include the representative of the Commandant Nigerian Defence Academy, Commandants of Nigerian Army School of Infantry Jaji and Nigerian Army School of Artillery Kachia. Others were heads of paramilitary agencies, resource persons, Staff Officers from the Army Headquarters and the Division, among others.

Highlights of the event included paper presentations on a topics titled “Building Leadership Capacity of Junior and Mid-Cadre Commanders: The Role of Operational Level Commanders in the Nigerian Army” and “Aspects of Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Threats and their Impact on Operations.” Others were interactive sessions, group photographs, and the presentations of souvenirs.
