2024 WASA: Governor Zulum Congratulates The Army, Reaffirms His Administration’s Support Saying That The Commitment and Dedication Of Troops Has Decimated Hundreds Of Insurgents

The Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has congratulated the military for their tireless efforts in combating terrorism and securing the state. The Governor stated this on Saturday, 18 January, 2024 in Maimalari cantonment as Headquarters Theatre Command and 7 Division Nigerian Army (NA) Celebrate end of Year 2024 Combined West African Social Activities (WASA).

The Governor represented at the occasion by the Head of Service Borno State, Barrister Malam Fannami reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for the military, stressing that the fight against insurgency was far from over but that progress had been made, “it is our hope that in no time the remnants of Boko Haram terrorism will be defeated and we shall all witness the full restoration of peace to Borno state and the Northeast (NE) in general.

According to him, “the commitment and dedication of our troops has led to the decimation of hundreds of insurgents, while a deft combination of kinetic and non-kinetic measures has led to the surrender of thousands of repentant Boko Haram adherents. But it has not been all rosy, as some troops have had to pay the supreme price in the discharge of their duties.”

Earlier in his welcome address, the Theatre Commander (TC) Joint Task Force (JTF) North East (NE) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), Major General Waidi Shaibu, emphasized the importance of the WASA as “an opportunity to reconnect with their various traditions and cultures. Also, this tradition of cultural connection and heritage is celebrated at the end of each year, regardless of their place of deployment.

The traditional rituals including the burning of impetus, dancing and exposure of masquerades and other activities that are synonymous with the culture and traditions of our soldiers across the country. It also involved sacrificial offerings at the end of the harvest of the beginning of the planting season to usher in peace, buffer harvest and progress for the new year.”

The event, which traces its origins to the days of the African Frontier Force during World War II, is a time-honoured tradition that celebrates cultural heritage and provides an opportunity for soldiers to reconnect with their roots. Originally starting as a ritual among soldiers with traditional heritage offering sacrifices at the harvest season, WASA has evolved over the years and is now an integral part of the NA’s social calendar.

General Shaibu also expressed gratitude for the successes of the NA in combating insurgency and terrorism in the region, noting that the event served as both a celebration and a moment to reflect on the year’s achievements and challenges. He spoke of the importance of the WASA in fostering unity and raising morale among the troops and their families.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division NA/Commander Sector 1 NE OPHK, Major General AGL Haruna, in his appreciation thanked the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Governor of Borno state, the Shehu of Borno, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, and other dignitaries present.

He also expressed his appreciation to those who contributed to the success of the event. He acknowledged the efforts of the organizing committee, the various cultural groups, caterers for making the occasion enjoyable and sumptuous.

Highlight of the event was the display of traditional dances by the ‘Zage’ cultural dancers and other cultural groups, masquerades, and cultural rituals, showcasing the rich diversity of Nigeria’s ethnic groups. Attendees enjoyed a variety of performances, including the lighting of the bonfire, tug-of-war displays, and the beating of the retreat, which are integral to the cultural practices of the army.

The occasion was graced by key figures, including Governor of Borno State, represented by the Head of Service. Also in attendance were the TC, JTF NE OPHK, Major General W Shaibu, Deputy Theatre Commander Major General KE Chigbu, GOC 7 Division NA/ Commander Sector 1 JTF (NE) Operation HADIN KAI Major General AGL Haruna, Components Commanders, Formations and Units Commanders, Commissioner of Police and other heads of security agencies. Others include the representatives of the Shehu of Borno, members of the State Executive Council, Staff officers, officers, soldiers and civilians
