5 Dead, 13 Injured in Ghastly Third Mainland Bridge Accident in Lagos
PUNCH reports that at least five people, including two children, were killed while 13 others were left injured after three vehicles crashed on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos yesterday.
The accident is said to have happened at about 6pm around the UNILAG Waterfront end of the Third Mainland bridge. The three cars involved were a LAGBUS, a Rover Jeep and a Hilux truck.
According to an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the accident was caused by the Hilux. The truck which had been moving at top speed reportedly blewout, somersaulted and then crashed into the other vehicles.
Several emergency response teams such as fire service trucks and ambulances arrived at the scene of the accident later to remove the corpses and clear the wreckage.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Michael Akindele also confirmed the crash on the bridge, adding that among the five people killed were three female adults and two children. Five injured persons were taken by LASAMBUS to the Trauma Centre.
Akindele also stated that proper investigations would be carried out to ascertain the cause of the accident. He also urged motorists to avoid speeding and adhere to traffic rules and regulations.
