54 African Nations To Gather In Nigeria For 2nd African Military Games

At least 54 African nations, including Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, are expected to converge in Nigeria in November 2024 for the 2nd Africa Military Games. Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Abidemi Marquis, Director of Sports at Defence Headquarters, disclosed this while briefing newsmen. Despite tensions within ECOWAS, military athletes from these countries have confirmed their participation in the event, scheduled from November 5-18, 2024, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

The event, themed “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa through Sport,” will feature both male and female athletes competing in 19 sports. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will serve as the grand patron, with Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru as patron and Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa as chief host.

AVM Marquis noted that 43 nations have already agreed to participate, competing in sports such as badminton, boxing, football, and taekwondo. He emphasized the economic and tourism benefits for Nigeria, highlighting the potential boost to infrastructure and local businesses.

Major General Abdullahi Maikano, President of OSMA, affirmed that Nigeria was granted hosting rights due to its capability and past successes. He stated that the games aim to foster unity and peace among African military forces and involve friends from countries like Russia, Germany, and the USA. Despite regional crises, the participation of nations like Sudan has been confirmed, and efforts continue to encourage more countries to join.
