6 Brigade Nigerian Army Partners With Taraba State On Greening Taraba Initiative, Flags Off TreePlanting Campaign At Army Barracks Jalingo
In a significant move towards environmental conservation and sustainability, the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army has partnered with the Taraba State Government to launch the “GREENING TARABA INITIATIVE.” This collaboration was marked by the flag-off of a symbolic tree planting campaign at the Army Barracks in Jalingo today 27 July 2024.
The Commander 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, in his welcome address, noted that the partnership is part of the Brigade’s Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) and aims to promote reforestation, combat climate change, and foster a culture of environmental responsibility within the state.
He added that the tree planting campaign at the Army Barracks in Jalingo is the first phase of a series of planned activities designed to restore and preserve the natural environment. “It involves the planting of 500 assorted trees (Neem Trees, Teak Trees, Masquerade Trees, and Umbrella Trees) here at our present location, which is the permanent site of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army,” he said.
General Uwa emphasized the importance of this partnership in addressing environmental challenges. “The 6 Brigade Nigerian Army is proud to join hands with the Taraba State Government through the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in this noble cause. Our collaboration on the GREENING TARABA INITIATIVE underscores our commitment to not only protecting the nation but also safeguarding our environment for future generations.”
The Governor of Taraba State, His Excellency Dr. Agbu Kefas, was ably represented at the event by the Chairman of the House Committee on Environment and Climate Change, Taraba State House of Assembly, Honorable Tafarki Agbadu. He expressed his appreciation for the Army’s proactive role in environmental conservation.
“This partnership is a testament to the unity and shared vision between the military and the state government. The GREENING TARABA INITIATIVE will significantly contribute to the ecological health of our state, and we are grateful for the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army’s dedication and support.”
In her goodwill message, the Honorable Commissioner of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Taraba State, Hajiya A’ishat Abdula’zeez Barde, noted that the GREENING TARABA INITIATIVE represents a significant step towards achieving sustainable development goals and mitigating the effects of climate change in the state.
She added that the ministry is planning to extend these efforts to other parts of the state. While appreciating the Brigade for being a partner in the progress of the state, she stated, “This initiative is part of a broader strategy to engage communities, raise awareness about environmental issues, and encourage sustainable practices.”
The ceremony, which was well-attended by top government officials and non-governmental organizations, was climaxed with the symbolic planting of trees by the Governor, the Honorable Commissioner of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the Commander of the 6 Brigade, and the Chairperson of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) 6 Brigade chapter, Dr. Mrs. Rachael Uwa, among others.
