
GOC 3 Division Reaffirms Nigerian Army’s Commitment To Environmental Sustainability
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Operation ENDURING PEACE, Major General EF Oyinlola, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the creation of a safer, healthier and greener cantonment environment through a strategic tree planting campaign conducted at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos.
Speaking during the occasion, Major General Oyinlola stated that the initiative was in line with the Nigerian Army’s commitment to environmental protection, climate change mitigation and the preservation of biodiversity within military barracks and host communities.
The GOC noted that tree planting remains a vital component in combating environmental degradation, soil erosion and excessive heat, while also improving air quality and beautifying the cantonment environment. The GOC further emphasized that the exercise was not only symbolic but also a practical demonstration of the Division’s dedication towards promoting eco-friendly practices and ensuring a sustainable environment for troops, their families and members of the public. He urged personnel of the Division to cultivate the habit of planting and nurturing trees in their respective locations in order to sustain the gains of the campaign.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the Tree Planting Committee, Col Adamu Iliya, expressed appreciation to the GOC and Commander Operation ENDURING PEACE for his unwavering support towards environmental conservation initiatives within the Division. He stated that the campaign was designed to encourage afforestation and improve environmental awareness among personnel and residents of Maxwell Khobe Cantonment. The Chairman further disclosed that the committee had carefully selected suitable tree species capable of adapting to the local environment, while stressing the importance of collective responsibility in protecting and nurturing the planted trees to maturity.
The event featured the symbolic planting of trees by the GOC, senior officers and members of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA). The tree planting campaign is expected to contribute significantly towards enhancing environmental sustainability, improving the aesthetic outlook of the cantonment and promoting healthier living conditions within the Division’s area of responsibility.
