Depot Nigerian Army Amasiri-Edda 5km Race: Promoting Fitness, Endurance and Comradeship Among Recruits

The Inter-Company 5 Kilometre race competition is the first of the series of events lined up for the training of recruits aimed at testing their endurance, physical fitness and build Espirit-de-Corps to withstand the rigors of training in the process of moulding recruits to become professional soldiers. Depot Nigerian Army Amasiri-Edda hosted its 5 km Race Competition where Golf Training Company emerged overall best on 22 August 2026.

The Special Guest of Honour (SGOH), Commandant Depot Nigerian Army Zaria, Brigadier General Usman Ahmad, was received by the Commandant Depot Nigerian Army Amasiri-Edda, Brigadier General Ahmed Ahmadu who was ably represented by the Chief of Staff Colonel Sadiq Ahmadu, senior officers, officers and instructors of the Depot, where he flagged off the competition. The race kicked off at the Depot Nigerian Army Amasiri-Edda Temporary Training Area parade ground ,where recruits competed across a challenging 5-kilometre route.

In his remarks, Brigadier General Ahmad commended the organisers for putting together what he described as “a remarkable event that exemplifies the Nigerian Army’s commitment to holistic soldiers’ development.” He emphasised that physical fitness remains a cornerstone of military professionalism and urged the recruits and personnel of the Amasiri-Edda Depot to maintain the highest standards of discipline and training. The SGOH also commended the Commandant describing him as an exemplary personality who portrays leadership and mentorship with the highest standard in every endeavor. The SGOH congratulated the winners for their commitment, he also commended all the training companies for putting in their best, added that it doesn’t matter whether they emerge first or last in position but rather what matters was that training had occurred and should be taken as an opportunity to learn and improve in their future exercises. He further said ‘set backs are opportunities to do better, urged them to continue to work hard and remain committed to training in order to become better soldiers ‘

The race concluded with the presentation of gifts and awards to individual male and female categories and companies who distinguished themselves during the competition.

Highpoints of the event included, the flag off, the race, announcement of results, presentation of individual and group awards, remarks by the SGOH and group photograph.
