Abuja’s Chinese Supermarket Denies Nigerians Entry
It appears Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, won’t stop attracting attention, as news has emerged of the existence of a Chinese supermarket in the Gwarinpa area where Nigerians CANNOT go to do their shopping.
The management of this “exclusive” supermarket said Nigerians are denied entry into the premises as a result of alleged nefarious activities. Isn’t that just lovely?
But of course, our guests – the generous Chinese – have stipulated conditions for entry: Nigerians, whoever they are, can only go in individually and not in a group!
Daily Trust reports that the Nigerians-not-allowed supermarket which is situated at 9 Bauchi Street, War College Estate, Gwarinpa, is a nondescript residential building turned store with only a Chinese decoration on the gate as the means of identification.
“You can only be allowed in if you are accompanied by policemen, because you are more than one” a gateman, simply referred to as Maxwell, said.
An attendant at the supermarket, Samuel Azenda, said the management reached the decision after it was robbed by Nigerians in May with over N2.5 million stolen. Prior to then, the gate was always open to all and sundry, he added.
According to Azenda, the owners of the supermarket were not available to shed more light on the bizarre situation as they’d been flown to China for medical treatment following injuries sustained during the robbery.
He concluded, rather charitably, by saying that the supermarket specialises in Chinese foods and items — of which Nigerians were nit major buyers. And the decision to ban Nigerians was not geared towards discrimination based on tribe or colour.
