AKA may have pulled out of South Africa’s biggest music festival Back to City but the rapper is getting into a messy fight with his countrypeople.
Earlier on, we reported that the South African top act pulled out of the festival, his reason being that the organisers promoted international acts while relegating the local talents to the background.
“Instead of what we had agreed upon, my name was confined to what I can only describe as minor details on the flyer,” the rapper wrote earlier, adding “I consider myself an International act. I have the tours‚ awards‚ following and most importantly the live show and music to prove it. With all due respect to Elzhi‚ Jay Live‚ Skyzoo & Camp Lo‚ I will not allow an artist like myself to be reduced to a minor detail.”
But the organisers are coming for the ‘Baddest’ rapper. Yesterday, in an official response, the festival organisers said that contrary to the rapper’s claim, he made an unprecedented request “about a campaign that would specifically highlight his performance feature by means of having extended time, a live band, special lighting effects, graphics display and fireworks.” And according to them, this was unexpected because they had already agreed on how to promote the rapper. You can read up the statement, including the chats between the two parties, here.
Following this development, fans who had previously supported AKA for pulling out are now calling him out for being too proud. See the reactions, plus AKA’s response to the organisers:
