Anambra Speaker Evades Impeachment by Fleeing with Assembly Mace
The Anambra state house of assembly was thrown into confusion on Thursday when some members of the house tried to impeach the speaker, Mrs Rita Maduagwu.
To frustrate the impeachment move, the Anambra speaker stealthily disappeared with the assembly mace, leaving the 28 members gathered for the day’s plenary without the symbol of authority of the house.
Members only got to know of Maduagwu’s disappearance when the bell meant to signifying her entry into the chambers rang several times and the speaker was nowhere to be found.
The majority leader, Victor Okoye, was therefore forced to call for the adjournment of the house to Tuesday, April 11.
The state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, thereafter arrived the assembly complex to intercede on Maduagwu’s behalf.
All 28 members who had indicated their readiness to impeach the Anambra speaker were all members of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).
Punch reports that Governor Obiano as a leader of the party in the state was said to have taken it upon himself to resolve the crisis.
Recently, the speaker of the Ondo state assembly was also impeached leading to a leadership crisis.
A new speaker, Bamidele Oloyelogun, was this week elected for the Ondo state assembly and he immediately decamped from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
