In its sustained effort to promote professionalism and respect for International Humanitarian Law (IHL) in the Nigerian Army’s (NA) ongoing operations within and outside the country, the Army Headquarters Department of Civil-Military Affairs (AHQ DCMA) has conducted a sensitisation workshop on Human Rights and Professional Conduct for NA personnel in Kwara State. The event was held on Wednesday, 5 November 2025, at the Major General SA Adebayo (Rtd) Multi-Purpose Hall, Sobi Cantonment, Ilorin, Kwara State.
The one-day workshop drew participants from the 22 Armoured Brigade, Nigerian Army Institute of Science Education and Technology (NAISET), Nigerian Army College of Education (NACOE) Ilorin, and 222 Battalion. The well-structured programme featured three carefully selected lecture topics: Psychoactive Substance Abuse, Mental Health and Family Cohesion, and Human Rights and Professional Conduct of Personnel.
The Deputy Commander of Narcotics, Mr. Kenneth Odili, delivered the lecture on Psychoactive Substance Abuse, while Brigadier General KT Archibong (Rtd) spoke on Mental Health and Family Cohesion. Similarly, Major JR Mamza, assisted by Captain ID Obarein, delivered a presentation on Human Rights and Professional Conduct of Personnel.
The objective of the workshop was to enlighten troops on the fundamental principles of human rights and professional ethics, ensuring that they understand their roles and responsibilities in upholding the NA’s core values at all times.
In his welcome address, the Provost of the Nigerian Army College of Education, Brigadier General Emmanuel Chidi Echebiwe, ably represented by the Deputy Provost (Administration), Lieutenant Colonel Veli Goje Burak, applauded the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaib, for organising such an impactful and well-coordinated sensitisation programme for NA personnel in Kwara State. He also welcomed participants and urged them to pay close attention, noting that the workshop would equip them with the requisite knowledge and skills to promote professionalism and good conduct during the NA’s ongoing operations.
In his remarks, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General Musa Etsu-Ndagi, welcomed all participants and expressed delight at the successful organisation of the event. He urged attendees to pay keen attention to the lectures, emphasising that the knowledge gained would guide troops to conduct their duties in a professional and lawful manner.
Major General Etsu-Ndagi reiterated that the NA is a professional force established by law to defend the territorial integrity of the nation and to win all land battles. He added that every member of the NA is a citizen first and must uphold and protect the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in accordance with military laws, policies, and procedures.
He further assured troops of the NA’s support in the discharge of their legitimate duties and encouraged participants to actively engage in the interactive session to clarify any grey areas before officially declaring the workshop open. The event was colourful, with insightful lectures delivered by erudite resource persons, while the question-and-answer session proved both engaging and enlightening.
