
Army War College Participants Embark On Operational Study Visit To 1 Division Nigerian Army
In a strategic endeavour to enhance the understanding of contemporary security challenges and the pivotal role of technology in Sector 1 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Participants of Air War College Nigeria, Course 11/2025, undertook an operational study visit to Headquarters 1 Division Nigerian Army, Kaduna. The visit formed a crucial component of the College’s Module 3, with a specific focus on national security, defence architecture and inter-agency collaboration.
The delegation, led by the Commandant, Air Vice Marshal PB Philips, underscored the significance of the visit in broadening the knowledge of participants and gaining invaluable insights into the operational dynamics of Sector 1 Operation FANSAN YAMMA and 1 Division’s endeavours in addressing security concerns within its Area of Operational Responsibility.
Air Vice Marshal Philips, who is the Eighth Commandant of the College, emphasized the imperative of leveraging indigenous defence technology to bolster national security. He highlighted the Division’s critical role in internal operations, underscoring the importance of synergy between military and civilian agencies in achieving strategic objectives.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, Major General Mayirenso Lander David Saraso, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division and Commander of Joint Task Force North-West Operation FANSAN YAMMA reiterated the Division’s pivotal role in maintaining peace and stability in recent times. He cited the successful application of non-kinetic approaches, which have yielded positive results, including the surrender of arms and hostages by terrorists, and the release of abducted school children, corps members, and Dr Ganiyat Popoola, from the National Eye Centre Kaduna.
General Saraso also announced that the Defence Headquarters has initiated a deradicalization and rehabilitation programme for terrorists who have willingly surrendered their arms, to provide them with the opportunity to reintegrate back into the society.
The participants, drawn from diverse military services and countries, comprised two officers from the Nigerian Army, two officers from the Nigerian Navy, one research fellow, and five officers from allied countries, including Cameroon Morocco and Botswana.
The visit featured a comprehensive brief on the operational activities of the Division and Operation FANSAN YAMMA, an interactive session, an exchange of souvenirs, a signing of the visitors’ book, and group photographs, providing a lasting testament to the significance of the operational study visit.
