About three weeks ago, Nigeria’s Supreme court overturned the conviction of former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Bode George.
Chief George spent two years in jail after a Lagos State High court convicted him for contract splitting while he was chairman of the board of Nigeria’s Port Authority. He was released about two years ago after serving out the sentence. But even after his release, Chief George still pursued the case to clear his name and get the verdict overturned. He lost at the Appeal court and headed to the Supreme court. The apex court has now overturned the conviction ruling that the offence for which he was charged was not known to law. Chief George was not in the country when the apex court gave the verdict. But he returned last week to a wild celebration by his supporters. He told pressmen that his jailing was a conspiracy among a group of both members of his party and opposition. He specifically mentioned Bola Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos state, some officials of his party,Lawyers; Femi Falana and Festus Keyamo, former EFCC chair, Farida Waziri including the judges who handled the case at the Lagos state high court.
