Bomb Blast Rocks Maiduguri, at Least 3 Dead
An explosion has occurred at M baba filling station, opposite Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN quarters in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, Daily Trust writes.
There has been no report of casualty yet, but unconfirmed sources say the suicide bombers only succeeded in killing themselves after detonating their suicide vests near the popular filling station that’s been the scene of a number of attacks in the past.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Two female suicide bombers attacked Maiduguri at about 3am today. They attacked near a filling station but only the bombers were killed.”
Abdul Ibrahim of the National Emergency Management Agency( NEMA) confirmed the report, saying:
“Three suspected suicide bombers detonated their explosives along Damboa road, Maiduguri, in the early hours of Friday, destroying three petrol tankers parked near the NNPC depot,’’
This latest attack has come barely two days after Acting President Yemi Osinbajo said the Boko Haram Islamist group had been effectively degraded and so couldn’t carry out brutal attacks in Nigeria’s north-east, before adding: “But we are still very careful.”
There have been isolated threats from the insurgents in Borno state since the turn of the year, most notably when three female suicide bombers reportedly detonated their explosive belts near Muna Garage, a popular bus station.
Soldiers however intervened to prevent an escalation of the attack in an operation that left no fewer than six of the terrorists dead.
This is a developing story, we’ll bring more details as they unfold…
