#Brexit: Petition for Second EU Referendum Crashes Government Website
As the world comes to terms with the United Kingdom’s shocking decision to exit the European Union after this morning’s Brexit vote, Britons in their numbers have rushed to sign a petition demanding a new poll.
The historic referendum saw Leave winning with 51.9 per cent of the vote compared to 48.1 per cent wanting Remain, heralding a seismic shift in the political landscape as the UK begins a two-year process of severing ties with the rest of the continent.
However, a petition set up by William Oliver Healey reads: “We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the Remain or Leave vote is less than 60% based on a turnout less than 75%, there should be another referendum.”
Express writes that the petition was so popular it repeatedly crashed the government website where motions are submitted, and has already amassed more than 122,000 signatures – surpassing the 100,000 needed to be debated in parliament.
It will run for six months, as is customary, and by that point a new Prime Minister may be in No 10 after David Cameron announced he would step down following the European failure.
In a poll that saw some 72 per cent of eligible voters turning out – the highest since 1992 – the cosmopolitan London and Scotland voted overwhelmingly to Remain, but most of the rest of the UK opted out.
The reactions to this latest petition on social media are just as intriguing…
