South Africa’s Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters is still in ‘cloud nine’ after she was crowned the new Miss Universe in Las Vegas, but she has strong comments about what she thinks of beauty pageants.

Speaking with E! News, the South African beauty who will be living in New York for a year, said her winning hasn’t fully hit her yet because she is still “running on adrenaline and very little sleep.”

Just after she got crowned, she was flown to New York City as her major prize is a year’s rent paid in the highbrow area of the city, and she is super excited. “I’ve never been here and I moved with just four suitcases,” she said.

Asked about her history with beauty pageants, the South African revealed that the Miss Universe is only the third time she was contesting for such, and she insists that women no longer have to choose between beauty and brains to mark their place in pop culture.

You can be beautiful and you can be smart and you can make a meaningful difference in your community, in your country, in your world,” she said.

However, Nel-Peters does not know what the future holds yet for her. While she settles in NY, she intends to “keep a bit more private” as this will enable her get her bearing.

And most importantly, Nel-Peters hinted that she won’t be on the NYC dating scene.
