Chief Of Air Staff Declares Physical Fitness Crucial To Combat Effectiveness At Maiden Nigeria Air Force Workshop

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, has emphasised that physical fitness remains a vital element of military preparedness, describing it as “a force multiplier” in combat operations. He made this statement on 24 July 2025 while declaring open the maiden Physical Fitness Workshop organised by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Directorate of Sports and Physical Education in Abuja.

Speaking on the theme “Enhancing Fitness Management Activities to Improve Operational Efficiency in the NAF,” the CAS, who was ably represented by the Chief of Administration, Air Vice Marshal Idi Sani, stated that physical readiness enhances mental alertness, endurance, and performance under pressure. Quoting General George S. Patton, he said, “The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war,” stressing that fitness is not optional but a military imperative.

Air Marshal Abubakar highlighted ongoing efforts to improve sports infrastructure, including the distribution of modern gym equipment to over 22 units and the refurbishment of facilities across NAF bases in Minna, Katsina, and Enugu. He further disclosed plans to introduce archery clubs across Commands to expand participation and promote family involvement in physical activities such as the weekly Wednesday games. Present at the workshop were senior officers including Branch Chiefs and Directors from the Defence Headquarters, representatives of various security agencies, and other key stakeholders, all gathered to support and contribute to the advancement of physical fitness and sports development within the Nigerian Air Force.
