Chief Of Army Staff Effectively Prioritizes Troops’ Welfare – Chief of Special Services and Programmes, Army
The Chief of Special Services and Programmes (CSSP), Army, Major General Jamal Abdulssalam has emphasized that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede has effectively prioritized troops’ welfare, since he assumed command. He stated this when he commissioned a project which consists of sixteen single self-contained, twin one-bedroom flats, central kitchen, central dining and two large halls named Python Camp at Port Harcourt Barracks, on 30 September 2025.
Speaking further, Major General Abdussalam, who was the Special Guest of Honour, said the project perfectly aligned with the COAS Soldiers First mantra, adding that it was about troops’ welfare first before any other consideration. Everything about the project was designed to care for troops’ welfare, he maintained.
The CSSP said the COAS has initiated several welfare packages that have impacted positively on troops and their families. These include improved ration cash allowances, significant improvement in health services, improved accommodation as well as educational interventions among others, across the Nigerian Army (NA) for troops and their families. He called on commanders at all levels to emulate what is being done in respect of troops’ welfare.
Earlier, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, NA, Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, while welcoming his predecessor to the commissioning of the transit accommodation for the GOC’s staff, said he was delighted to have him in Port Harcourt Barracks. He added that the event was significant, as it not only consolidated the laudable achievements recorded under his command as the immediate past GOC, but also reflects the drive to align with the COAS Command Philosophy, particularly as it relates to troops’ welfare and the provision of befitting living and working conditions for them.
The GOC informed that construction work is currently ongoing for 60-unit blocks of flats within the Division, designed to address the accommodation deficit faced by officers and to complement the solid foundation laid by the immediate past GOC. He eulogized him for his contribution and maintained that his legacies are enduring. He assured that the Division under his command would not only preserve, but improve upon the standard he set and nurture the vision he set when he commanded the Division.
Major General Emekah, who executed the project, thanked the immediate past GOC on behalf of officers, soldiers and civilian staff of the Division. The project has the capacity to accommodate over fifty soldiers.
