Chief of Military Intelligence Visits Nigerian Correctional Service To Strengthen Ties With Agency
In a bid to strengthen ties between services and agencies, the Chief of Military Intelligence (CMI) (Army), Major General Thompson Ugiagbe, paid a courtesy visit to the Controller-General (CG), Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Controller Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, today, Tuesday, 30 April 2025, at the Service Headquarters in Abuja.
Earlier, Major General Ugiagbe highlighted that the visit underscores the importance the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) places on working in a joint environment. He further expressed his keen interest and readiness to work closely with the Correctional Service, stating the importance of synergy among security agencies aimed at ensuring timely and effective intelligence sharing.
In his response, CG Sylvester Nwakuche welcomed the visit and commended the Nigerian Army’s efforts in combating terrorism. He thanked the CMI (A) for initiating stronger ties between sister agencies. He stressed that the fight against terrorism must be a joint effort, and the time for increased collaboration is now.
In his words, “This visit signifies the beginning of a stronger partnership in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.” “We have always desired peaceful collaboration with the Army, and we believe that together, we can restore lasting peace to the nation.”
The CG also highlighted that NCS has made significant contributions to national security and rehabilitation. He cited the Service’s partnership with universities, noting that 54 inmates recently graduated from tertiary institutions. He further shared success stories, including that of an inmate who has authored over five books while serving time, and vocational programs in farming, tailoring, carpentry, and baking that equip inmates for reintegration into society.
In his words, “When inmates are properly reformed and empowered, they return to society as contributors to national development and not threats. That is our goal.”
Additionally, he expressed his desire for a more sustained relationship and requested that his officers be considered for training opportunities in intelligence-related matters. Furthermore, General Ugiagbe assured the CG that whenever intelligence-related training programs are open to other security services, officers from the NCS would be considered.
The high points of the visit included the signing of the visitors’ book, exchange of souvenirs, and a group photograph.
