COAS Champions Troops Welfare, Flags Off Construction Of 1,800 Housing Units At Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks Phase II
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Wednesday, 24 December 2025, performed the ground-breaking ceremony for Phase 2 of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks in Asokoro, Abuja, marking another decisive stride in the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to troop welfare and sustainable housing solutions.
The project follows the successful commissioning of Phase 1 in January 2025 and aligns squarely with the COAS’ command philosophy, which places the Soldier First through deliberate investment in welfare, robust administration and institutional stability as the bedrock for building a professional, resilient and combat-ready force.
Speaking at the ceremony, Lieutenant General Shaibu reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s resolve to holistically address accommodation challenges across its formations nationwide. He noted that the initiative represents a deliberate shift from short-term remedial measures to enduring, long-term and sustainable housing solutions for officers and soldiers.
The COAS further disclosed that the project comes at a critical time when the Nigerian Army is intensifying efforts to bridge existing accommodation gaps. He stressed the determination of the Army leadership to complete all ongoing residential projects, while simultaneously initiating new ones in line with evolving personnel needs.
Lieutenant General Shaibu explained that Phase 2 is an entirely new barracks, distinct from Phase 1 earlier commissioned by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR. He emphasised that the project is a central pillar of the Soldier First concept, designed to improve the living conditions of troops and family member while strengthening unit cohesion, enhance morale and ultimately boost operational effectiveness.
“Upon completion, the barracks will provide secure, decent and dignified accommodation for personnel and their families, thereby ensuring stability on the home front and enabling soldiers to focus fully on their constitutional responsibilities” the COAS averred.
Lieutenant General Shaibu further expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steadfast support and funding of the project. He reaffirmed the unalloyed loyalty and commitment of officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Earlier, the Coordinator, Nigerian Army Special Projects, Major General Bayode Adetoro, disclosed that while Phase 1 accommodated 614 personnel, Phase 2 is projected to house approximately 1,800 personnel upon completion.
Major General Adetoro described the project as a tangible and enduring expression of the Chief of Army Staff’s command philosophy, anchored on a Soldier First culture that prioritises troops welfare through a comprehensive support framework aimed at guaranteeing stability on the home front.
