
COAS Commissions Project In Akwa Ibom State, Underscores Commitment To Civil-Military Cooperation
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oloyede has commissioned a newly renovated block of classrooms at Itam Secondary School, Obong Itam, Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State on 29 August 2025. The COAS, was represented by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Nigerian Army (NA), Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah.
Speaking at the event, the Army Chief reiterated that under his leadership, the NA would sustain efforts and strengthen collaboration with relevant stakeholders, particularly local communities, in pursuing both kinetic and non-kinetic lines of operations to improve security nationwide. He further stressed that the relationship between the NA and the people must remain collaborative, as the NA belongs to the people and relies on their support. The COAS reassured of continuous drive to support Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) and improve the welfare of local communities. He stated that the renovated building was aimed at providing students with a conducive learning environment in line with the NA’s strategic goal of nurturing future leaders.
He further encouraged the good people of Akwa Ibom and local communities, where troops are deployed to remain steadfast in their support by providing timely and credible information to security agencies. According to him, this support is crucial to sustaining a safe and secured environment, where socio-economic activities can thrive.
Earlier, the facilitator of the project, who is the Director of Exercises, Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) NA, Major General Effefiong Ekpenyong, described the commissioning as a unique and emotional moment for him, his family, and the entire community. He noted that Itam Secondary School was his alma mater and had played a pivotal role in shaping his life and career.
Major General Ekpenyong explained that the renovation and remodeling of the iconic building was made possible through the initiative of the COAS, which encourages senior officers to give back to their communities through impactful projects. He expressed hope that the project would further strengthen CIMIC and win the hearts and minds of the people in support of the NA’s ongoing operations across the country.
The building, which houses offices for the Principal and Vice Principal, a staff room, examination office, and classrooms for both Junior and Senior Secondary sections, was described as strategic and beneficial to both staff and students. He also paid glowing tribute to his late father, who served as a security guard in the school, until his passing in 1995, noting that the memories of his service inspired his determination to give back to the school.
Highlights of the event included a song and dance presentation by students of Itam Secondary School, the official commissioning of the renovated structure, presentation of souvenirs, as well as goodwill messages from various dignitaries.
In attendance were senior military officers both serving and retired, the Honourable Commissioner for Education, traditional rulers of Itu Local Government Area, village representatives, and members of the host community.
