COAS Distributes Fertilizers To Farmers In Benue, Reaffirms Amy’s Commitment To Food Security
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General OO Oluyede NAM, has flagged off a major agricultural support initiative in Benue State, distributing fertilizers to farmers across local government areas on Monday, 25 August 2025, in a bold move to strengthen food security and community resilience.
The initiative, themed “Enhancing Food Security through Community Protection: Defending the Harvest, Securing the Future,” is part of the Nigerian Army’s broader commitment to national development while safeguarding rural communities from security threats.
Represented by Sub-Sector Commanders of Sector 1, Operation WHIRL STROKE, under the leadership of the Commander 401 Special Forces Brigade and Sector 1 OPWS, Colonel Kolawole Bukoye, the COAS emphasized that the Army’s role goes beyond providing physical security to also empowering farmers with essential inputs for a successful farming season.
“Food security is national security. As we protect our communities, we must also ensure our farmers have the resources they need to make their labour fruitful. By providing fertilizers at the right time and in the right quantity, we are securing both the present harvest and the future prosperity of our nation,” General Oluyede stated.
He further assured the people of Benue State of the Army’s sustained efforts to combat insecurity, stressing that the ultimate goal is to enable farmers to fully return to their farmlands without fear.
Benue State, widely regarded as the food basket of the nation, stands to benefit greatly from the programme. Beneficiary farmers described the gesture as timely, noting that access to fertilizers will boost yields, reduce production costs, and improve food supply across the country.
Speaking on behalf of the local government chairmen, the Chairman of Makurdi LGA, Hon. Joseph Keffi, expressed appreciation to the COAS for what he described as a lifeline for rural households grappling with high agricultural costs. He commended the Nigerian Army for its foresight in linking security with agricultural productivity, thereby protecting both lives and livelihoods.
“The Nigerian Army remains resolute in its mission to defend the harvest today and secure the prosperity of tomorrow. This intervention is another demonstration of our unwavering commitment to the Nigerian people,” the COAS added.
