Convergence Of Digital Technology With Military Operations Not Just An Option, But An Imperative — COAS

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja NAM has stated that the Nigerian Army (NA) is rapidly evolving and modernizing towards enhancing operational effectiveness through the use of advanced technologies and equipment in military operations. The COAS made this declaration on 12 September 2024 during his opening remarks at a one-day seminar on Digital Transformation and Smart Soldier Concept organised by the Department of Army Transformation and Innovation (AHQ DATI) at the Headquarters 3 Division, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos.

The COAS stated that the seminar was in furtherance of the current drive of the NA to leverage advanced technologies to modernize military operations, improve decision making process and ensure adaptability towards tackling evolving multi-dimensional security challenges. He also noted that the concept of a smart soldier embodies military efficiency from enhanced situational awareness to real-time information sharing and advanced communication systems. He further pointed out that transformation is not merely adopting new technologies but fostering a culture of innovation and adaptability in a rapidly changing environment.

Represented by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Operation SAFE HAVEN, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, the COAS reiterated that the seminar was in line with his command philosophy “To Transform the NA into a well-trained, equipped and highly motivated force towards achieving our constitutional responsibilities within a joint environment”. Lieutenant General Lagbaja while commending troops for their efforts in the fight against insecurity on the Plateau reaffirmed his unalloyed commitment to improving the welfare of troops and security in the country.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Chief of Transformation and Innovation, Department of Transformation and Innovation Army, Major General Zakari Abubakar stated that the aim of the seminar was to sensitize personnel on the need for integration of digital technologies into NA operations. He posited that the seminar will expose officers and soldiers to the possibility of integrating advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Data analysis into military operations.

Represented by the Deputy Chief of Transformation and Innovation, Major General Adewale Adetoba, he revealed that the seminar will further enhance capacity of junior and middle cadre officers to make informed decisions and manage resources effectively in a rapidly changing environment.

Delivering their lectures on “Leveraging Digital Transformation for Enhanced Operational Effectiveness in the NA: OPSH in Perspective, Warrior Ethos, and Effect of Drug Abuse on Operational Effectiveness in the Nigerian Army”, guest speakers, Major General AA Ayannuga, Major General BA Alabi and Mr Egwa Godwin all agreed that the primary function of a soldier is to fight and defeat the enemies of the state. The lectures further posited that, digital technology, professional competence, core values of the NA, mental as well as abstinence from the physical and emotional effects of drug abuse are necessary forces that reinforces a smart soldier and warrior ethos.

Highlights of the event were interactive sessions, group photograph and presentation of souvenirs to resource persons and moderators.
