Customs Murtala Muhammed Airport Command Intercepts Endangered Species Worth Over N1Billion
The Nigeria Customs Service, Murtala Muhammed Airport Command, has made seizures of 6 packages of suspected dried shark fins with a Free On Board Value of N221,885,769.02 and 25 packages of suspected Dried Donkey Genitals with an FOB value of N1,010,372,761.98.
While briefing newsmen at the Command on Thursday, 17th August 2023, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Sanni Yusuf, said the seizure was made through coordinated anti-smuggling activities in synergy with other critical stakeholders while also stating the conditions at which the seizures were made.
He said, “These items were seized mainly because of various forms of infractions on Export guidelines and failure to comply with CITES and other extant laws,”.
“The suspects in connection with this illegal intended Export have been arrested, and investigation is ongoing”, he added.
Comptroller Yusuf also noted that the command generated a total of N47,249,785,020.44 from January to July 2023,
which represents 83.24% of the target met, compared to the same period in 2022, N40,335,607,654.90, a progressive difference of N6,914,177,365.55k, representing a 17.14% increase.
He appreciated Officers and Men of the Command for their dedication to service as well as Sister Agencies for their support.
“Let me use this opportunity to appreciate my Officers and Men for their dedication to the Service. I urge them to always adhere strictly to the Rules of Engagements while discharging their statutory duties”, he said.
