Ondo State runner Abiye David and Janet Dung on Saturday emerged winners of the open and veteran categories of the 2021 Lagos Women Run.
In the Open Category, David grabbed the title in 33 minutes 41:4 seconds, after she broke away from the bunch three kilometres into the race and led all through the remaining seven kilometres on the flat surface route from the mainland to Lagos Island.
The experienced Ondo runner, who placed third in last year’s event, got a cash prize of N1m for her efforts.
In second place was Edo State’s Mary Osagie, who finished in 34 minutes 06:03 seconds. She received N500,000, while Haruna Hawa (Plateau) placed third in 34 minutes 33:06 seconds to take home N300,000.
In the veteran category, Nigeria’s top athlete Janet Dung from Plateau State emerged champion in 40 minutes 05:8 seconds, ahead of second-place Comfort Ekanem from Ogun State, who finished in 43 minutes 44:9 seconds. Ladi Henry, also from Plateau, came third in 45 minutes 40:6 seconds.
Over 3000 runners participated in the 10km race, which started from the Iyun Road end of the Funsho Williams Avenue, and ended at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, while another 1000 participated in the virtual race on the official Lagos Women Run App, as COVID-19 restrictions were observed.
The wife of the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat and the first female Managing Director of Shell Petroleum, Mrs. Andoni Elohor, were special guests at the event.
