EFCC, INEC Partner To Fight Corruption
As the country steadily move towards 2019 general elections, the Acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, has called on Nigerians to rise up to their responsibilities by making the right choices of leaders in order to move the nation forward.
“I encourage everyone to get their permanent voters card (PVC) and get the right people into office as a medium of fighting corruption. We are currently mobilizing everyone individually and collectively to support the anti-corruption fight”, he said.
Magu made the appeal while on a courtesy visit to the Chairman, Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, at the INEC Headquarters, Abuja on Thursday, February 8, 2018.
He urged Nigerians, irrespective of gender or status to support the fight against corruption.
The EFCC boss likened corruption to ‘cancer’ noting that it had remained the bane of Nigeria’s development. He stressed the need for a collective effort at curbing it.
Prof. Yakubu thanked Magu and his team for the august visit and assured him that the Commission would need EFCC’s support in fighting the scourge of vote buying.
He said open vote buying will not be tolerated by INEC.
“INEC is worried about the recent trend of open trading of fuel observed around filling stations. Our democracy must never be on sale in the open market as this is an abuse of the right of Nigerians as such, open votes buying will not be tolerated by the Commission”, said the INEC boss.
According to him, “If we get our elections right, we will get our democracy right and if we will get our democracy right, we can get Nigeria to be great again and corruption free”.
Prof. Yakubu expressed readiness to partner EFCC to curb corrupt practices especially during elections adding that with the current electoral reforms, Nigeria is on the path of greatness.
“We are on the same page with EFCC and will always be on the side of the law”, he added.
In attendance were INEC National Commissioners: Baba Shettima Arfo, Anthonia Simbine, Tijami Mauzu, Engr. Naheeche, Okechukwu Ibeanu, Mohammed Haruna and Abubakar Nahuche, Mustafa Lecky, Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola, Oluwole Ossase Uzzi (Director of VEP) and the National Secretary, Barr. Mrs Chinwe Ogakwu.
