EFCC to Mark African Anti-Corruption Day with Road Walk

Foremost anti-corruption agency in Nigeria, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has finalised plans to commemorate the 2018 African Anti- Corruption Day on Wednesday July 11, 2018 with a road walk.

According to the acting Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu the ‘walk’ which will involve cross section of stakeholders drawn from the Civil Society Organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations, Development partners, government agencies and trade union groups among others, will hold from 7am in Abuja and major cities where the Commission currently have office.

The other cities are Lagos, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kaduna, Kano, Gombe, Maiduguri, Enugu, Benin and Uyo.

The objective of the ‘walk’ is to sensitize the youths on the dangers of corrupt and the role which they should play in fighting the malaise.

Head of states and Governments of the African Union, AU, in 2011 declared July 11 every year as the ‘African Anti- Corruption Day’, following the adoption of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption on 11 July, 2003 in Maputo, Mozambique.

This year’s event has unique resonance coming against the backdrop of the AU declaration of 2018 as the ‘African Year of Combating Corruption’, with the theme, “wining the fight against corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation”. The designation of President Muhammadu Buhari as Africa’s Anti-Corruption Champion also adds a distinct Nigerian flavour to this year’s event with the EFCC driving the process.
