Emir of Kano Shows Supports for Gender Equality
Yesterday, the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, took to his Instagram to make his stand against gender inequality in homes, especially in cases of domestic violence.
“Truth be told, a man wouldn’t want someone hitting his daughter, so he shouldn’t hit someone else’s daughter,” he said, adding, “when a man hits a woman, it gives him a measurement of his control. He is not treating her with respect.
“Instead of her being his equal, she allows him to place himself above her while she becomes the peasant,” the Emir continued. “And the only reason why this happens is because those women allow it.”
This comes days after the Olori of Ife gave her controversial speech, standing against gender inequality. You can read about that here.
However, while the Emir of Kano did not speak on the Gender Equality bill which seeks for the protection of oppressed widows, the girl child and women in workplaces, he noted that domestic violence against women, and toleration of it, is another form of oppression against women.
“This is NOT normal,” he says of men who have no qualms with hitting women. “It’s a mental sickness that needs to be rectified & We need to act on #GenderEquality against#DomesticViolence“
