FAAN ARRESTS ARIK STAFF OVER BRIBERY AT LAGOS AIRPORT

The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) arrested a staff of Arik airline over bribery and corruption at the Muritala Mohammed Airport, Lagos.

The staff whose identity was not released, was arrested while soliciting for a bribe from a travelling passenger at the General Aviation Terminal of the Muritala Mohammed Airport, Lagos.

FAAN said the On Duty Card of the erring staff has been withdrawn. The female suspect is said to have been handed over to the appropriate security agency for immediate action.

FAAN said in a statement that the move is a fallout of a meeting it held over the “Incessant extortion of passengers by airport officials at the nation’s airports and steps being taken to address the situation.”

Recall that the FAAN had recently released new regulations regarding how to reduce the menace of extortion at the country’s airports, following the alleged extortion of an American, Alina Olivier at the MMIA on the 26th of October. 

That meeting was attended by the MD/CE, Directors of the Authority, Special Adviser to the President on Ease of Doing Business, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, Airport Managers and Airport Chiefs of Security. The General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Henrietta Yakubu (Mrs.), disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

At that meeting, it was resolved resolved that henceforth, any erring airport official caught soliciting for bribes at the nation’s airports will be permanently denied access to the airports. 

Airport officials were also directed to always wear conspicuous name tags anytime they are on duty. MD/CE, Captain Yadudu further directed the “Airport Managers to ensure that all stakeholders at the airports are properly sensitized on the new development as there will be no sacred cows.”
