The family of Mohammed Fawehinmi, the first son of the late human rights lawyer Chief Gani Fawehinmi have confirmed that he died of COVID-19 related complications.
The family confirmed the cause of his death during a briefing in Lagos Today.
Intelligence gathered that Mohammed Fawehinmi died at the age of 52 years old in Lagos.
Saheed Fawehinmi, the second son of Chief Gani Fawehinmi, who spoke on behalf of the family said: “The family could not immediately disclose the cause of our brother’s death because we wanted the information to be based on factual medical details especially as maybe contained in the death certificate.
“Today however, we are in a position to inform you that our dear brother died from COVID-19 related complications.”
They also used this opportunity to urge all Nigerians to take necessary precautions to avoid being infected by the deadly disease.
“This includes but should not be limited to, taking the required doses of Covid-19 vaccine, correctly wearing face masks, regularly sanitizing and washing hands with soap and maintaining social distancing amidst crowd.”
Speaking on the burial arrangements, Saheed said the service of songs and the night of tributes will hold on Wednesday, August 25, at the Archbishop Vining Cathedral in Ikeja from 4pm to 7pm.
“The two events will be divided into two halves. The night of tributes will enable friends, associates, partners, comrades, human rights activists, pro-democracy, trade unions and socialist groups to pay their tribute.
“In the morning of Friday August 27, the remains of our brother would be interred at the Gani Fawehinmi family compound in Ondo Town after a brief funeral services,” he said.
In view of the Covid-19 pandemic still ravaging, the family therefore pleaded with those who would like to identify with the family during these ceremonies to be conscious of the pandemic, as crowd would be limited at the ceremonies.
