The city officials have said five people were killed and over forty people injured when on Sunday, a red SUV broke through the barricades into a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
The incident which occurred around 4.39 pm local time saw a red SUV at high speed drive through a series of barricades and barreled into the crowded parade route on Main Street.
According to a Twitter post on Monday, “At this time, we can confirm that 5 people are deceased and over 40 are injured. However, these numbers may be changed as we collect additional information. Many people have self-transported to area hospitals”.
Police Chief Daniel P. Thompson says “we have a person of interest in custody”.
“This is still a very fluid investigation, in which children are among the injured”, Thompson said.
“A Waukesha police officer discharged their weapon in an attempt to stop the driver, and no bystander was struck by the officer’s gunfire”, the chief added. Thompson believes that no shot however may have been fired from the vehicle.
Thompson further reiterated that it is currently unknown whether Sunday’s incident was an act of terrorism.
The scene in Waukesha which is located about 20miles west of downtown Milwaukee is said to be now safe and secure.
