Headquarters 3 Division Organizes WASA 2024 For Personnel and Families

The Headquarters 3 Division Nigerian Army successfully organized the West African Social Activities (WASA) for its officers, soldiers, and their families on Sunday, December 22, 2024. The vibrant event took place at the Rhino Sports Pavilion, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos, and was attended by numerous esteemed guests, including government officials, heads of security and paramilitary agencies, captains of industries, traditional rulers, and retired senior military officers.

The Special Guest of Honour, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang, who was represented by the Commissioner for Land, Survey, and Town Planning, Barrister Peter Nyam Gai, delivered remarks highlighting the significance of WASA as a vital platform for military personnel and their families to engage in a spirit of camaraderie while celebrating their cultural heritage. He acknowledged the unwavering support of the Plateau State Government and its people toward the 3 Division, emphasizing, “This gathering is not just a testament to the bonds we share but also a clear reflection of the unparalleled hospitality, steadfast support, and unwavering cooperation that the people of Plateau State extend to security agencies.”

Governor Mutfwang also praised the cultural displays featured at the event, stating, “Today’s event has evoked a myriad of sentimental feelings, as I witness the vibrant cultural performances and the beautiful array of dances by our talented artists. Plateau State, alongside Nigeria, is uniquely blessed with a rich cultural heritage.” He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in and promoting cultural heritage to position Plateau as a leading tourism destination.

In his welcome address, Major General AE Abubakar, General Officer Commanding 3 Division (GOC 3 Div) and Commander Operation SAFE HAVEN, acknowledged that WASA is a cherished annual celebration marking the culmination of the Division’s training activities and the dawn of a new year. “WASA is more than just an event; it is a cherished tradition within the Nigerian Army, reaching back to our pre-independence days,” he stated. Major General Abubakar emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation in maintaining peace and security, thanking the various security agencies for their collaboration and support.

The GOC also took the opportunity to appreciate the organizing committee for their hard work and dedication, while advising personnel and their families to remain security-conscious during the festive season. He reinforced the expectation of professionalism among soldiers during Operation GOLDEN PEACE, cautioning that deviations from the military’s Code of Conduct would be met with appropriate sanctions.

Major General Abubakar extended his gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen OO Oluyede, NAM for his unwavering support, which has significantly improved working conditions and enhanced the welfare of troops within the 3 Division. He appreciated the opportunity afforded to the Division to host various training activities in 2024, which have sharpened the troops’ professional skills in line with the COAS command philosophy.

The event featured several highlights, including tours of units and formations, cultural displays, tug-of-war competitions, and award presentations to deserving soldiers. The evening culminated with lowering the flags to mark the official end of the social activities and the lighting of a bonfire to strengthen the bond of brotherhood among Nigerian soldiers and other security agencies.
