International Committee Of Red Cross Holds Sensitization Lectures At HQ Sector 2 Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai Damaturu, Yobe State
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Wednesday 16 Aug 2023, Commenced a 2 days capacity building for officers and soldiers of Headquarters Sector 2 JTF (NE) OPHK, on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) holding at the Sector’s Training Hall in Damaturu, Yobe State.
In his welcome remarks, the Commander Sector 2, Major General Mayirenso Lander David Saraso, appreciated the ICRC Team for reaching out to the Sector to educate its officers and soldiers on IHL particularly as it concerns protection and assistance to victims of armed conflicts and other violence situations. He stressed that the seminar will be of benefit to the participants as it would enhance their knowledge on the subject particularly as it concerns their powers and limitations during armed conflict situations.
The Commander further enjoined the participants to have open minds and avail themselves the opportunity to get enriched by the contents of the lectures to be delivered.
Speaking earlier, the ICRC Team Leader, who is also the Head of Office of the ICRC in Damaturu, Yobe State, Muhammed Abdirashid appreciated the Sector Commander for the support given to the ICRC towards facilitating the training within the Sector’s Area of Responsibility. The Head of Office further stated that the essence of the training was to interract with the participants and enhance their capacity and understanding of IHL. He further encouraged the participants to contribute in the discussions in order to make it more mutually beneficial to both sides.
The first lecture for the day covered Introduction to IHL, protection of civilian populations, ICRC work in detention, IHL principles, direct participation in hostilities and military in security operations. Other series of lectures are scheduled to be delivered by various resource persons from the ICRC during the 2 days training.
