International Maritime Institute Of Nigeria Organizes Executive Course On Blue Economy For Media Practitioners
On Wednesday, 30 July 2025, the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) held an Executive Course on the Blue Economy for media practitioners at the IMION Auditorium, Apapa, Lagos. The course drew participants from the Nigerian Navy as well as various media organisations within the maritime sector. The course was designed to equip media practitioners with the knowledge and confidence to translate complex maritime issues into compelling, responsible, and solution-oriented journalism. This initiative aims to strengthen the link between public awareness, informed policymaking, and sustainable maritime practices.
In his remarks, the Director General of IMION, Rear Admiral Thaddeus Udofia (rtd), urged participants to ensure that the key learning outcomes of the course are practical and actionable. He emphasised the need for participants to return to the drawing board to clearly articulate the concept and significance of the Blue Economy, navigate the complex regulatory landscape of the maritime industry, and apply newly acquired insights to enrich journalism with depth, accuracy, and impact. He also expressed gratitude to the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, for his unwavering support to the Institute, which made the course possible.
Presentations were delivered by Rear Admiral FD Akpan (rtd), a retired senior Naval Officer, and Mrs. Funke Agbor, SAN, a renowned scholar in the maritime sector. The course featured syndicate and interactive sessions during which participants shared experiences and asked pertinent questions. A guided tour of Nigerian Navy Ship UNITY was also conducted, exposing participants to the routine operations of a naval vessel.
