#JusticeforAltonSterling: Will the Black Man Ever be Truly Free in America?
Yesterday, a major outrage was sparked on social media as yet another black man was murdered in cold blood by two white police officers who claimed they acted in self-defense.
Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old father of five, was fatally shot outside a Food Mart in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Tuesday, after police received an anonymous call that he had been pointing a gun at someone. The cops claimed Alton reached for a gun in his pocket and that was when they shot him however a new video shows otherwise.

The food mart owner identified as Abdullah Muflahi, who was a few feet away, also confirmed that Sterling never reached for his gun.”They tasered him, threw him on to a car, then on the ground and they got on top of him. The gun was never visible. When they shot him it was not in his hand.” he told the Telegraph. Sterling had been selling bootlegged CDs outside the food mart for two years before his death.
After his death, Huffington Post shared this on their Instagram page:
This begs the question: Will the black man ever be truly free in America?
In 2012, 17-year old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed after a policeman claimed he was ‘acting suspiciously’ and in 2014, 12-year-old Tamir Rice had been shot by two police men who saw him playing with a toy gun. The officers in both cases were not convicted and in Trayvon’s case, he was even posthumously placed on trial for his own murder.
In 2015 alone, over 100 unarmed black people were killed by the police with only 10 out of the 102 cases resulting in the convictions of the officers involved. So can America sincerely continue to claim it is ‘the Land of the free??’

Meanwhile, this video below speaks volumes on this subject.
These testimonies tell a very gory tale, one that makes us question what freedom and independence really mean in America; especially for the man of colour.
