Kano Rerun: Jibrin Concedes Defeat, Alleges Voter Intimidation
The Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Alhaji Aliyu Yako, has been declared winner of the Saturday rerun in the Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency of Kano State.
Yako defeated a former Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, of the All Progressives Congress.
Jibrin polled 13,507 votes against the 48,601 votes polled by Yako of the main opposition party.
Announcing the results, the returning officer, Prof Abdullahi Arabi, said no fewer than 20 political parties participated in the Saturday polls.
“Ali Datti Yako, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby returned as duly elected,” Arabi said.
Also, the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Doguwa, was declared winner of the Doguwa/Tudun Wada House of Representatives’ rerun.
Arabi, who said 15 political parties participated in the rerun, said Doguwa of the APC scored 66,667 votes to defeat his closest rival, Alhaji Yushau Mohammed of the PDP, who polled 6,322 votes.
However, Jibrin in a statement on Sunday alleged harassment and intimidation of his loyalists and party faithful who turned out to vote for him.
He said, “My constituents came out en masse to exercise their civic responsibility but were denied their franchise to vote the candidate and party of their choice through the application of maximum force in all the wards of our constituency except my home town of Kofa, Bebeji, that proved impenetrable. We know we won the election fairy and squarely but our mandate was stolen.
Also, Munir Dan’Agundi retained his seat to represent Kumbotso Federal Constituency at the Green Chamber after scoring 32, 114 against the PDP candidate, Umar Balla, who garnered 31, 258 votes
However, on the rerun into the Kano State House of Assembly in Madobi, the APC scored 25, 403 to beat the PDP candidate, who got 23,625 votes, while in Minjibir, the APC polled 18, 455 to defeat the PDP candidate, who polled 17, 607.
Other results include Rogo, where the APC scored 26, 730 to beat the PDP, which garnered 26, 362 votes; and in Bunkure, the APC clinched the seat, scoring 20, 566 votes against that of the opposition (PDP), which got 19,941 votes.
