LeBron James Opens Special School for Low-Performing Kids
According to Ohio News, the legendary basketballer, through his LeBron James Family Foundation, has partnered with Akron Public Schools in his hometown in Akron, Ohio, to map out a new public school Tuesday evening progamme called I Promise School, which will attend to all students who are “at risk of falling behind their peers.”
The basketballer’s foundation has already supported more than 1,100 students in the past 6 years, availing them appropriate programmes, support and mentors.
This new school programme would be part of the Akron Public School System, and what LeBron James’ foundation will do is basically to provide all the support and funds needed to achieve the goal.
This heartwarming news comes months after the NBA champ upped his community activism by taking 5,000 kids from Akron to the Cedar Point amusement park in Ohio. James partnered with Chase Bank to pay the entrance fees for the kids and their families into the park. The highest earning basketballer also partnered with University of Akron to provide a guaranteed four-year scholarship to students.
Each year he takes children on trips before entering them for his ‘I Promise’ initiative. Those who qualify for the programme win scholarships which cover their tuition and the University of Akron general service fee — currently $9,500 per year.
During the presentation of his plan for public school students, James said:
“I can’t believe I have my own school. It feels surreal,” James said. “This city has done so much for us, and I guess at this point … the least we could do is continue to give back … and lay the blueprint for the kids and the generations that come after it.”
Here’s a man with a heart of gold!
