Manchester United have agreed a deal with Shakhtar Donetsk to sign Brazil midfielder Fred.

Fred, 25, completed a medical on Monday  and is now set to become Jose Mourinho’s first signing of the summer as the club looks to challenge for honours next season.

Though details of the deal have yet to be revealed, it is believed to be in excess of £50m.

“Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached an agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk for the transfer of Frederico Rodrigues de Paula Santos (Fred),” the club said in a statement on their website.

Described as a smaller version of Fernandinho, Fred featured in Brazil’s 2-0 pre-World Cup friendly win over Croatia at Anfield on Sunday but didn’t say anything about his future when quizzed by the media.

He joined Shakhtar from Internacional in 2013, has been named in Brazil’s World Cup squad for the tournament in Russia.
