It’s official! Mariah Carey has been booked to guest star in the upcoming season 3 of FOX’s Empire.
The network made the announcement yesterday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. Mariah will reportedly make her long-awaited debut on the hit series in an episode set to air in October, and the pop superstar will not be playing herself.
According to FOX, Carey will take on the character of Kitty, a mega-superstar who comes to Empire to collaborate with Jamal Lyon (played by Jussie Smollett) on an explosive new song. Kitty helps Jamal to overcome personal difficulties and reach a musical breakthrough when they begin to have trouble with their duet.
But will Mimi’s appearance help the ratings of the show?
Empire has been struggling to boost its ratings since it plummeted after Season 1. So far, the show has been unable to meet up the 17.6 million viewers and 6.9 rating it garnered in its first season; despite having various celebrity guest appearances on the show.
Additional celebrities who have been tapped for Empire‘s third season include rapper French Montana, actor Taye Diggs, and rapper Birdman.
