There is no doubt that the senate is male dominated as there are only seven female lawmakers in the National Assembly. Three of the female senators were elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while the other three are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Monsurat Sunmonu: She represents Oyo Central senatorial district under the APC. Sunmonu who was born on April 9, 1959, was the immediate past speaker of the Oyo state house of assembly. She is the first female speaker in the Oyo state house of assembly in the history of the state which she emerged on June 10, 2011. Senator Sunmonu is the currently the chairman of the Senate committee on foreign affairs.
Fatima Raji Rasaki: Rasaki is representing Ekiti Central senatorial district, she is also the wife of retired Brigadier General, Raji Rasaki, who was a military governor. She was a civil servant before her venture into politics. She was born on January 1, 1957. She joined the eighth assembly under the platform of the PDP.
Remi Tinubu: Remi Tinubu who represents Lagos central senatorial district was sworn in under the platform of the APC. She is the wife of Bola Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos. She was born on September 21, 1960.
Stella Oduah: Senator Stella Oduah represents Anambra South senatorial district. Stella Oduah-Ogiemwonyi was the minister of aviation. She was confirmed to the post and sworn in on July 2, 2011, and was deployed to the Ministry of Aviation on July 4, 2011. However, Stella has been called out for being involved in some scandals which include the 255 billion naira bullet proof cars scandal. She was married to the former Minister of works, Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi. Oduah contested under the PDP.
Biodun Olujimi: The senator representing Ekiti South senatorial district was born on December 25, 1958. She began her political career in 1997. The deputy minority whip joined the eighth senate under the platform of the PDP. She is a wife, a mother and a grandmother.
Binta Garba: She is popularly known as the ‘Iron Lady’. The senator representing Adamawa North senatorial district won her seat under the platform of the APC. However, she has been elected into the Federal House of Representatives three times from 1999 to 2011. She is the first politician to represent two different Federal Constituency at the National Assembly and the only female senator-elect in all the 19 northern states of Nigeria in 2015 election. The senator was born April 17, 1957. In an interview, she said she wanted to be the first female Senate president.
Rose Oko: Senator Rose Oko representing Cross River North senatorial district was born on September 27, 1956. She won under the platform of the PDP. However, she was a university lecturer before delving into politics.
