Meet The Most Relevant Retired Brigadier General In The History Of The Nigerian Army

During the course of my military career, several years ago, I was attached to the Army Headquarters where I had the privilege of meeting Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman (rtd). He remains one of the most vibrant, dedicated, and hardworking staff officers I have ever encountered.

I vividly remember how he used to run up the stairs to the 4th floor—sometimes more than 30 times in a single day—in response to the calls of the then Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (rtd). His energy and commitment were unmatched, even during the most challenging periods of military operations. He was not only a staunch promoter of the Nigerian Army’s mission but also a mentor who shaped the careers of many officers and soldiers.

One of his most outstanding protégés is Lieutenant Colonel Apollonia Anele, currently the Acting Director of Army Public Relations (Ag. DAPR). It amazes me that years after his retirement, Brigadier General Usman remains exceptionally active and relevant within the Nigerian military. He consistently attends major military conferences and continues to contribute meaningfully to the growth and progress of the Nigerian Army.

What strikes me the most about him is his humility, loyalty, consistency, and resilience. Despite his closeness to the Chief of Army Staff at the time, he did not rise to the rank of Major General. Yet, he remained dedicated, loyal, and true to his values. Today, he is more relevant and impactful than many who attained higher ranks.
