Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Shares Vision for Growth at 6th NAS Scientific Conference
The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, delivered a keynote Address at the 6th Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) Scientific Conference, highlighting the essential role of science and innovation in driving Nigeria’s economic progress.
Speaking to an engaged audience, the Minister opened with a critique of the current growth rate, stating, “We are not growing as fast as we should.” He emphasized that in order to achieve the ambitious goals set by President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” Nigeria must elevate its growth levels significantly.
“Countries like China and Brazil have shown us that by putting science and technology at the forefront of our economic strategies, we can achieve remarkable success,” the Minister remarked. He pointed out that without embracing science, Nigeria risks falling behind in crucial sectors like agriculture, solid minerals, and healthcare.
The Minister called for a stronger partnership between policymakers and the scientific community, saying, “We need to listen to those who are experts in their fields and work together.” He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering scientific engagement.
“Achieving double-digit growth is possible if we work together and also respect our climate goals,” the Minister added, inviting participants to collaborate and innovate. He highlighted a successful initiative from his time as governor of Kebbi State, where partnerships with scientists led to significant increases in agricultural productivity. “We saw rice yields jump from less than one ton per hectare to over four tons,” he shared.
The Minister wrapped up his address with a call to action: “Let’s move beyond blaming and start taking steps to change our future. This government is ready to work with you.”
