NAOWA 82 Division Commemorates International Day Of The Boy Child

The Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), 82 Division Chapter, joined the global community in commemorating the International Day of the Boy Child on 16 May 2025. The celebration took place at the Headquarters 82 Division Auditorium, Abakpa Cantonment, and brought together pupils and students from various Nigerian Army schools, including the NAOWA Nursery and Primary School, NAOWA College, Command Day Secondary School, as well as boys from the Barracks Community.

In her welcome address, the Chairperson of NAOWA 82 Division, Mrs. Oritseseyisan Adeola Olatoye, speaking on behalf of the NAOWA National President, Mrs. Mernan Femi Oluyede, emphasized the significant role of the boy child in society. She encouraged the boys to strive toward making sound decisions that would shape a brighter future. She also urged parents to guide and support their children, helping them grow into productive, responsible citizens and ambassadors of Nigeria.

The event’s Father of the Day, Major General Oluyemi Thomas Olatoye, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, highlighted the importance of recognizing the unique challenges faced by boys. He stated that the day serves as a platform to promote their well-being and empowerment. Referring to the theme, “Boys, Your Decision Shapes Your Future,” he linked it to the Chief of Army Staff’s (COAS) command philosophy “To consolidate the transformation of the Nigerian Army towards bequeathing a well-motivated, combat-ready force capable of discharging its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environment.”

Maj Gen Olatoye advocated for greater global recognition of the International Day of the Boy Child by the United Nations, comparable to the observance of the International Day of the Girl Child. He urged boys to find their voice, make informed decisions, and resist external pressures that could derail their chosen paths. He further encouraged parents to actively mentor their children, laying a solid foundation for their future.

Highlights of the event included a debate competition between NAOWA College and Command Day Secondary School, an educational lecture, cultural song and dance performances by students, the presentation of gifts and souvenirs, and group photographs.
