
NAOWA 9 Brigade and BRECAN Hold Breast Cancer Awareness Walk and Sensitization Lecture
In a rejuvenated effort to raise consciousness and advocacy for routine breast examination for early breast cancer detection and effective management/treatment, the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) 9 Brigade Zone in partnership with Breast Cancer Association of Nigerian (BRECAN) Lagos Chapter conducted an awareness walk and sensitization lecture in TA Lagbaja Cantonment, Ikeja, Lagos State.
The event, which took place on 8 November 2025, saw the participants undertake the awareness walk to Onigbongbo Community and around TA Lagbaja Cantonment. The event culminated in a sensitization lecture at the Command Day Secondary School (CDSS) Hall. In his lecture, the Operations Officer BRECAN Lagos Chapter, Mr Promise Ihezie, tutored the women on how to carry out self breast examination and highlighted signs and symptoms to note as possible signs of breast cancer.
Delivering her remarks, the Chairperson BRECAN Lagos Chapter, Mrs Chinenye Arih, said her being a breast cancer survivor was possible as a result of early detection, as such, she encouraged the women to routinely visit medical centre for checkup. She thanked the immediate past Coordinator NAOWA 9 Brigade Zone, Mrs Olubukola Olayinka Oyekola, for sponsoring and planning the entire event. She then extended her appreciation to the incumbent Commander 9 Brigade Nigerian Army (NA), Brigadier General Ayokunle Owolabi, for ensuring availability of other logistics and most importantly releasing the staff to coordinate the event on behalf of NAOWA.
Earlier in his remarks, the Commander 9 Brigade NA, Brigadier General AO Owolabi expressed his readiness to sustain the partnership with BRECAN and support their activities for the well-being of TA Lagbaja Cantonment community. Brigadier General Owolabi, who was represented by the Chief of Staff Headquarters 9 Brigade, Colonel IB Sheriff, told the participants to take advantage of the free examination/screening session by doctors to know their status and ask questions that would benefit them.
The event was climaxed by choreography performance by students of CDSS Ikeja and a presentation of cash gifts to some breast cancer survivors, among others.
