Nigeria Customs Female Basketball Team Eyes Gold Medal After Final Eight Qualification
The Nigeria Customs Service female basketball team has expressed confidence in clinching the top prize at the Savannah Conference competition after qualifying for the Women’s Premier League final eight.
In an interview on Wednesday, 2 October 2024, team captain Ikem Akaraiwe expressed optimism about their chances, citing improved teamwork and cohesion.
“It was a scrappy start, but as the game progressed, the players stepped up. The team got to know each other better, and now there is team cohesion,” she said.
Akaraiwe also referenced their previous experience at the final eight, stating, “Last year was our first time on that stage in a long time. This time around, we are hoping to go not just one step further, but to make it to the podium.”
Head coach Mohammed Abdulrahman assured that his players are prepared for the final games. “For once in a long time, I am beginning to have this feeling that we are going to be underdogs. But this is a good thing for us because it means there won’t be much pressure, and we can do what we need to do and come away with a result.”
The final eight of the NBBF Women’s Premier League will take place at the Lagos Sports Hall, National Stadium, Surulere, from 13 to 20 October 2024.
